Back to MOMA

I went back to MOMA today. I was going to the Guggenheim but felt there was more to see at MOMA. There is a paper exhibition on there which is so good I could look at it for a week. I am going back tomorrow with camera. (There goes my visit to the Met).

I also managed to get to the American Museum of Folk Art which had a stunning exhibition of Kaleidoscope quilts by Paula Nadelstern and so many beautiful objects.

The Drawing Center and MOMA etc

Last night I finally had time to digest my experience at Ragdale. I think that it has resulted in a new drawing based approach to my practice. Before I left Brisbane I had been exploring painted geometric form and pattern but I think that I have now developed new techniques which will be line based to produce two and three dimensional works.

Today I went to an exhibition of work by the German surrealist artist and author Unica Zurn at the Drawing Centre. The works were beautiful delicate finely balanced images with elaborative patterning.

I then went to MOMA and saw another wonderful drawing based exhibition tangled alphabets, the works of South American Artists Leon Ferrari and Mira Schendel. I was so good that I am planning to go back maybe tomorrow.

I also got to see works by Barnett Newman and Agnes Martin among others.

Surrender

I know I have to give up flower shots and get this blog back on track but how could I resist this?

Trout Lilies

These beautiful plants appear miraculously and bloom profusely for several days and then like the Scilla Siberica they fade away. Coming from the subtropics where the zinnias battle away for three or four months it seems incomprehensible that their spring display should be so short.

New Project Idea

Last night I went to see Leonard Cohen in concert. It was fantastic and I wish I could go again. Given my failure to receive funding to exhibit and attend residencies, I am seriously considering applying for a grant to produce new work based on my experience as a groupie following the Leonard Cohen world tour.

And, I saw a chipmunk this afternoon.

Apologies for the very wobbly hand held camera.

In One City Block.

I haven't ridden the El yet as all the stairs are a challenge for my ankle and leg. As I was walking under it I noticed that it looks like it may have been installed by the same firm that manages a lot of our call centres. While walking on the same block I was reassured to see that maintenance of fire fighting systems was taken more seriously.

Saturday at Art Chicago

On the way to Art Chicago the bridges were raised. Chicago has more of these bridges than any other city. I tried to take a photo of the Merchandise Mart where Art Chicago is held but could only get half the building in one frame. But don't panic the show was only on 2 floors so I probably only walked about 20km. I bought a beautiful drawing by Danica Phelps. There was so much to see. My favourites were the Sol Le Witt gouaches. By 2pm I decided that what I needed was more art so I went to the MOCA where the Olafur Eliason exhibition opened yesterday. Sooo beautiful. Light installations and beautiful, beautiful geometry. No photos allowed!

Sunshine in Chicago and how to choose a good hotel.

I am in chicago to see Art Chicago. I went yesterday and was blown away as I stepped out of the lift to see Sol Le Witts, Jenny Holzers, and my first ever, and most haunting beautiful, Helen Frankenthaler. Like all Art Fairs there is also some ordinary work and I am going for a better look today.

Today I woke to sunshine and here are some views from the window. And, also the wallpaper in the hotel bathroom. I think I want to stay in the bath all day.

Major Rain Event

We are having what is described in the press as the second major rain event in 2 weeks. Yes it is wet. Today this beautiful creature, which is apparently a skunk!, transferred her babies to higher ground. She looks like a luxuriant persian cat.
