Weathered at Tweed River Gallery

I am very excited to be exhibiting at the exquisite Tweed River Art Gallery with my great friend, colleague and collaborator Nicola Moss . The exhibition runs concurrently with the travelling exhibition of works from the Ann Lewin collection making it well worth the trip.

I can't wait to see the work Nicola and I created last year while we were in residence at Montsalvat finally hung in the space for which it was created.

I'm also delighted that  artist and photographer Carl Warner , who used to document my work when I lived in Queensland and whose work I greatly admire will be opening our exhibition.

Networking, exposure etc.

My work And the River Looked at Siddhartha with 1000 Eyes, 2005, (far right) is currently in an exhibition at Anita Traverso Gallery, Melbourne.

On a negative day I wonder if I am babbling into a vast void but there are several good reasons for blogging. It provides an opportunity to communicate one's thoughts and ideas, it can be a diary or, as in the case of Queensland artist Nicola Moss it can serve as space to record information and observations which are later published as a book. Recently I wrote about the ideas that formed the basis of some new work and was amazed and delighted by the response. I have also been fortunate in the past few days to have my work featured on two blogs which I admire - The Design Files is Lucy Feagin's blog which features design, architecture and beautiful things and oh what a world, oh what a world , artist Lorraine Glessner's blog where she generously show cases the work of other artists. I really appreciate the mentions and the opportunity to widen my network. Thank you Lucy, Lorraine and Anita who has two of my works on show in Melbourne!

The ?Wednesday Report

I've had a busy few weeks making deadlines and new work.
I submitted images of work for inclusion in the Paper Works exhibition at Brenda May Gallery in March. I had to photograph some of the work myself, hopefully for the last time as I now have a contact for a photographer in the area.

I have also sent off  the exhibition title, images for publicity and a new artist statement for my solo exhibition at Anita Traverso Gallery in Melbourne in May. Writing a new artist statement was once an angst ridden activity but is now a pleasure rather than a task as I condense and sharpen all the ideas and influences that have been milling around as I make work.
Last week I worked with Brisbane Artist Nicola Moss on our collaborative project. The work went well and we managed to complete and package the video for exhibition later this year. Working with another artist is always good not only from the perspective of sharing the creative process and ideas but also because it gave me the opportunity to get valuable critical feedback about me new work and to discuss the business and promotion side of my practice.
As a result I have decided to apply for a couple of grants ...... more paperwork and deadlines but in the meantime I am off to Sydney to see Marianne Faithfull at the Sydney Opera House tonight as reward for all the hard work. Here's a little taste of Marianne in Paris last year courtesy of YouTube.

Saturday in Sydney

On Saturday I went to SNO Contemporary Art Projects. It was my first visit to the gallery which is housed on the first floor of an Arts and Crafts style building in the culturally diverse Sydney suburb of Marrickville.
We were planning to stay overnight in Sydney and had Pino our Maltese/Poodle cross with us and I noted with amusement that there was not another small white dog to be seen in the busy Greek and Vietnamese shopping strip.
Upstairs the gallery is comprised of a group of small, well lit and pleasingly proportioned rooms which reminded me a little of the upstairs area in Ray Hughes Gallery in Red Hill, Brisbane in the 1980’s.
It was the last day of the Emma Landridge, Shiau-Peng Chen and Cathy Blanchflower exhibition and the first time I had seen Cathy Blanchflowers work in the ‘flesh’. I have admired her work online and it was great to enjoy her palette and to see the brush marks that give vigour to her beautiful patterned works.

Later in the afternoon we went to the opening of the Flower Show at Brenda May Gallery at Danks Street.
This is the second group show I have seen at the gallery and once again I was impressed by the curatorial skills of the gallery. The exhibition includes some wonderful works by Tanmaya Bingham, Nicola Moss, Ruth Howard, Fiona Fenech and Melinda Le Guay and continues until 18 October.

After the opening we went to dinner at billy kwong, one of my favourite restaurants and I had the chance to catch up with my colleague and friend Nicola Moss and then we went off to our dog friendly hotel the Hughenden in Woollahra where little white dogs are almost de rigeur. Breakfast next morning was like a scene from a Woody Allen movie with a cast of wonderful extra and dogs on dining chairs and laps. It was a lovely weekend and we returned home to find that our chooks are back on the lay!

Nicola Moss Artist

This is the second in a series of posts about my peers. I must add that these posts are appearing in no particular order and irregular intervals.
Nicola Moss is a South East Queensland artist whose genres include painting, mixed media, print making, public art projects, photography and video. her work focus on the observation, documentation and interpretation of landscapes.
I met Nicola a couple of years ago through a mutual friend and we continued to see one another at arts networking events. As we came to know one another better we realised that while our work was very different we shared a lot of interests and ideas. This has resulted in collaboration on several projects.
Nicola is currently Artist in Residence at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens. You can see more about the residency on Nicola's blog Layers of Life.
I love Nicola's work with is rich and layered surfaces and subtle observations of her surroundings and was delighted to write the catalogue essay for her recent solo exhibition Greenbelt at Doggett Street Studios. In addition to being an avid fan of Nicola's work I am also in awe of her professionalism.
Nicola has been invited to be part of the exhibition The Flower Show at Brenda May Gallery from 22nd September to 18 October 2009.

Parting Gifts

Yesterday was a day for the exchange of gifts.
My friend and fellow artist Nicola Moss gave me a beautiful farewell card and one of the works from her residency at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens which I had admired on her blog.
We had one of a series of farewells with our friends Jen and Helen. Jen went home with two of my works to remind her of us.
These exchanges are very pleasant.
